What Is a Shower Enclosure?

A glass shower enclosure uses glass panels to seal off all the open sides of your shower area. If you need a complete seal to protect against water, preserve privacy, maintain warmth, or prevent steam, choose a shower enclosure. Because the glass panels seal all openings, each enclosure requires at least one door to access the interior. Walk-in screens have gaps deliberately, but enclosures close completely.

Complete Protection and Privacy

Why Choose Enclosures Over Screens?

Glass enclosures foster a cosy, warm atmosphere by effectively trapping steam and heat inside your shower area. They provide superior water protection for your bathroom since there are no open sides for moisture to escape. Unlike shower screens that allow cold air and water to flow through the opening, glass enclosures keep your shower experience comfortable and contained.

If you want privacy in your shower, consider enclosures with privacy glass, which offer complete coverage all around. For comparison, shower screens cannot provide total privacy if you need that; even with frosted glass, someone can still see you from the open entry side. In family homes where multiple people share bathrooms, enclosures with privacy glass are the best option for achieving true privacy from every angle.

Shower Enclosure Layouts

There are three main ways to set up a glass shower enclosure, and the number of tiled walls that make up the shower space determines which one you use. Corner enclosures use two walls to create square, rectangular, rounded, or diamond-shaped spaces. Inline enclosures use three walls, and three-sided enclosures use only one wall. The size of your bathroom, available space, and design preferences determine which layout best suits your installation.

Corner

Corner enclosures occupy bathroom corners where two walls meet, with glass panels creating the enclosed space. This configuration maximises floor space while allowing fixtures on adjacent sides and corner entry positions.

Inline

Inline shower enclosures use three walls within a recess or across an entire bathroom end. Three solid walls create a secure, protected feel while requiring minimal glass, making this the most cost-effective layout.

Three-Sided

Three-sided enclosures are attached to one wall and have glass on three sides. These installations do require bigger bathrooms, but they let in the most light and provide more space, making for a luxurious showering experience.

Frameless vs Framed

You can choose between two main glass shower enclosure designs: frameless and framed. Our framed enclosures use carbon-fibre-reinforced aluminium, which supports textured glass types with superior water containment. Frameless options feature minimal fixtures and polished edges, adapting to complex spaces at approximately one-third the cost.

Shower Enclosure Door Types

The door you choose for your shower enclosure is important because it affects how you enter and exit, as well as the amount of space you need. The size of your tray, the space adjacent to the shower, and any nearby toilets or vanity units will all affect the type of door mechanism you choose. Each type of shower door has its own advantages for your enclosure.

Swing

Swing doors open outward or inward using hinges, just like regular doors throughout your home. They're the most familiar option for enclosures when you have adequate space in front of the opening.

Sliding

Sliding doors move along tracks without needing room for door swings, making them ideal when obstacles sit close to your enclosure. They work best on wider trays where doors can slide across.

Bi-fold

Bi-fold doors fold against themselves, reducing swing space dramatically compared to standard doors. Choose these for compact enclosures on small trays when obstacles in front make problematic layouts challenging.

Wet Room Shower Enclosures

We install glass shower enclosures on any floor type to suit your bathroom requirements. Our enclosures adapt to traditional raised trays positioned above the floor, flush-mounted trays sitting level with your flooring, or fully tanked wet room floors. Each installation method affects the step height, visual appearance, and level-access capabilities of your enclosure.

Glass Over Tray

Traditional raised tray installations position acrylic, stone resin, or enamelled steel trays above your bathroom floor level. The glass enclosure sits 10 mm inside the tray edge on the flat surface, creating a visible step and a small gap around the glass perimeter. This standard approach provides reliable waterproofing without requiring floor modifications.

Flush-mounted tray installations position the tray level with your bathroom floor. The enclosure glass sits partially over both the tray and bathroom tiles, concealing the joint beneath the 10mm glass thickness. This approach eliminates the step, creates level-access showers, and conceals the tile joint beneath the glass.

Wet room floors use tanking membranes with formed wet room trays beneath finished floors that sit flush with your bathroom floor. The glass can be fixed over the floor surface using various fixtures or in the floor itself. These installations enable identical flooring throughout the bathroom and shower area, creating a unified design without visually distinct zones.

Enclosure Height and Ventilation

Shower enclosures seal completely on all sides, trapping wet air inside. Without proper ventilation, this causes black mildew on silicone seals and yellowing on door gaskets within months. You have two height options: standard height with a ventilation gap, or full height to the ceiling. Your choice depends entirely on the location of your bathroom extractor fan.

Standard Height

Standard Height Enclosures

If your extractor fan is located in the bathroom ceiling (the most common setup), choose the standard height with a ventilation gap. We position the glass below your showerhead and align it with tile lines, door frames, or cabinets. This leaves a gap at the top where wet air escapes into the bathroom, and your fan extracts it. Without this gap, moisture gets trapped, causing black mildew on silicone and yellowing door seals. The gap keeps everything dry and prevents deterioration.

Full Height

Full-Height to Ceiling

If you want glass to extend right to the ceiling, you must have an extractor fan installed inside the shower area itself. The fan extracts wet air directly from inside the enclosure, preventing moisture build-up. Without an inside fan, trapped moisture causes black mildew on silicone seals, and door gaskets turn yellow within months, even with anti-mildew products. You could leave the door open after every shower, but most people find this impractical. The inside fan is essential.

Metal Finishes for Glass Shower Enclosures

We can create glass shower enclosures in any metal finish to go with the look of your bathroom. Modern black offers a dramatic contrast, and warm brass lends a hint of timeless charm. Our metal parts are coated with a professional finish that performs well in wet conditions. We offer 24 standard finishes and can create custom ones to complement your bathroom's style.

Black Finishes

Black works exceptionally well in bathrooms because most spaces have light colours and white finishes. We offer black in brushed, gloss, satin, and matte finishes. Black shower enclosures are available in frameless, framed, and grid designs. Grid designs with black frames create an industrial aesthetic, and the glass panels maintain an open and airy feel.

Brass & Bronze

Our fixtures come with variations of brass with polished, brushed, antique, and unlacquered coatings. Brass and bronze create warmth and sophistication in bathrooms. These finishes complement natural materials perfectly. Unlacquered brass builds a natural patina as it ages, giving your bathroom an authentic, worn character.

Other Finishes

You can select from various finishes, including copper, nickel, chrome, and white. Chrome is particularly popular for frameless showers. We don't limit the selection to standard finishes; bespoke options are also available. These custom finishes use anodising, plating, or PVD coating to match your specific bathroom design.

Glass for Enclosures

Most of the frameless enclosures we make are made of 10mm-thick glass, whereas some framed options come with 8mm glass. We always toughen glass for the shower enclosure panels. It's required for safety reasons and to have a robust and rigid glass construction. Such glass, if it breaks, shatters into small pieces that can't cause much damage. Moreover, toughening makes it over five times stronger, which also reduces the chance of breakage.

Water droplets beading on glass with hydrophobic easy-clean coating, demonstrating water repellent properties

Easy-Clean Coating

We apply a hydrophobic coating to all of our shower enclosures' glass, making them easier to clean. The coating prevents hard water from sticking to glass, which also reduces the buildup of soap scum and limescale. It keeps your glass clear for a longer time with little care.

1. Clear & Low Iron

Standard clear glass has a slight green tint, which is more noticeable as the thickness increases. For a purer appearance, we offer Ultra Clear low-iron glass, which completely removes the green tint. Low-iron glass offers a pristine transparency and is especially suitable for use in white bathrooms.

2. Tinted Glass

We can supply tinted glass in grey or bronze for a contemporary look. Tinted glass adds visual warmth to your bathroom while providing subtle privacy. The tint runs throughout the glass's thickness, so the 10 mm grey option looks like a black tinted panel.

3. Privacy Glass

There are frosted, fluted, and other bespoke textured glass options available for added privacy. We can also use sandblasting to make patterns or designs on glass panels. The frosted glass texture beautifully diffuses light while limiting the view, making it ideal for shared bathrooms or en-suites.

4. Laminated Glass

We can laminate two toughened glass panels together for decorative effects. Between the layers, we can add a metal mesh, colourful interlayers, or even textiles for unique designs. Laminated glass creates stunning feature panels while maintaining safety standards.
